~ FUTURE THINKERS SESSIONS ~ Unconditional Income For Everyone?

Future Thinkers Sessions for the Zeitgeist Movement Australia

SCIENCE – TECHNOLOGY – NATURE – SUSTAINABILITY

Leading on from our last event about the potential of robots, this month we’re fortunate enough to have Dr David Tuffley joining us to talk about his extensive research on UBI (unconditional basic income) which has the potential to not only remove fears associated with technological unemployment, but may even see people embrace it! It also has the potential to solve a range of other social problems and provide the freedom to work on what’s really important to us and the planet.

Dr. David Tuffley is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Ethics and SocioTechnical Studies at Griffith University’s School of ICT with an on-going interest in Universal Basic Income. A regular contributor to mainstream media on the social impact of technology, David is a recognized expert in his field. He is an engaging science communicator of many years experience.

His formal qualifications include a PhD (Software Engineering), Master of Philosophy (Information Systems), Grad Cert in Higher Education (all from Griffith University), Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology, English Literature, Anthropology (University of Queensland).

Future Thinkers Sessions is open platform to meet and chat with other ‘self-proclaimed’ controversial deep thinkers, scientists and philosophers… basically anyone who likes to think about anything. This is a realistic, fun and empowering meet-up about applying science to social concern. Don’t worry, we don’t put you on the spot… there’s no expectation to explain your position, and no expectation of any qualification.

We provide…

• Short presentations on human behaviour, society, new crazy technologies and cool ideas

• Study groups and panel discussions on philosophical questions like “How do we engage people resistant to logic and reason?” or “Does wealth provide happiness?”

• Awesome socially-aware music, podcasts and radio shows

• Insightful and hilarious pointed videos for social concern

Please feel free to sit at the back and hide in the corner, or announce your opinion of some particular policy, or share your understanding of a scientific discovery or discuss your general thoughts on a particular topic. 😀 😉 We’d love that. We look forward to meeting you!

Doco and Discussion

Melbourne Zeitgeisters 🙂

This is the DEC 16 instalment in our monthly documentary series. Even if you’ve seen the doco being screened, the doco night is a great chance to see how the issues and material presented relates to the movement, have a general chat and get involved.

DOCO – What would Jesus Buy?

An examination of the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America’s mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands – Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement.

TZM Sydney Activism meetup

Hi Geisters!

We’re meeting again this Saturday 26 November to continue planning, organising and coordinating activities and activism.

In the last meetup we talked about the meeting various TZM activists from around Australia had Melbourne in September. Brisbane has been selected as the Main 2017 Z-Day event in March 2017, and there are lots of things to organise for it. This is an opportunity for us to shine with great talks, talented artists, fantastic food, and a large crowd of committed Aussies, in this 2-day long massive event.

We’ve also launched Movies That Matter, a monthly meetup to watch and discuss important documentaries, along with thought provoking short activism clips. Next coming up is the film “Snowpiercer”, a thought-provoking film about the stratification of society.

We have an upcoming project for street activism distributing awareness-raising printed material, and need to discuss and coordinate efforts, so that it is a whole chapter activity rather than an individual’s activism.

As usual, the meetup will be two hours long, from 1pm to 3pm, at the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts.

Please promote this meetup among your friends and anyone you think might be interested! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
