Monthly Movies that Matter – The Internet’s Own Boy (movie changed)

The Brisbane chapter of The Zeitgeist Movement (TZM) presents Monthly Movies That Matter on the third Saturday of every month.

The event is free of charge.

There will be a few short videos and some discussion before showing the feature movie – The Internet’s Own Boy – The Story of Aaron Swartz. Depending on the length of discussions, the event will probably finish up around 5:30.

It’s a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people, make friends and have a great time. At the same time, having meaningful discussions that will have a positive impact on our future.

After the event, we will move on from the library to a nearby restaurant, where we can eat and socialise some more. The restaurant for this month hasn’t been decided yet but I’ll update this space once it has. You are welcome to skip the movie and join us for dinner if you like.

Check out our calendar on MeetUp for other TZM events that may interest you.

THEATRE Workshop, Social & JAM Night – Thursday nights with the Burrow Network!

Come together to hang out, chat, plan projects or events, meet interesting people, brainstorm together and empower each other. Caution – very casual setting 🙂 Lafe Charlton has worked in and around the Brisbane Theatre scene for over 20 years and we are stoked to have him on board hosting our first ever THEATRE workshop from about 7PM! Come along if you are keen to develop some new skills through some fun activities like role plays, theatre exercises and maybe even a poetry recital. This is a fun way to increase your confidence when on stage and/or in the center of attention and a great way to develop your public speaking skills also! If you’re more musically inclined, bring along an instrument and there shall be some jammin on the back deck upstairs! We will also have the social and creative table happening as usual, so feel free to bring any creative projects to work on – we will provide basic arts supplies and paper to bring out those inner children we keep locked up way too much! See you there!!

TZM Sydney meetup: Participation

The Zeitgeist Movement is a Global Sustainability Advocacy Movement.

In this meetup we will begin to coordinate the participation in the projects discussed in the previous meetup. There was a proposal put forward to create Chapter Teams to manage the coordination of each projects. In this meetup we will discuss if and how these teams will be organised.

The following projects were put forward in the last meetup, and will be discussed at greater length in terms of logistics and objectives for each:

• Research activities and events being conducted by other chapters around the world, which ones are popular or effective for activism, and which ones could be implemented locally.

• Organising the TZM Sydney Chapter as a non-profit

• Organise periodic film nights and talks/seminars

• Communicate via social media (radio / YouTube / Twitter / Facebook / others to research) and produce local content to appeal to local audiences

• Organise Chapter Team efforts, information, coordination and resources through a Wiki

This meetup will go for two hours, and will be followed by a Gaianism meetup for those interested. Gaianism aims at developing an open-source value-system derived from its two main principles: sustainability and consistency.

Note that the venue has changed (resulting from a mishap booking upstairs at Lentil as Anything). The meeting place is the rooftop of the Websters bar (ex Zanzibar). There is a chance that the rooftop will be full, in which case we will head to the park. If you come late and we’re not there, or can’t find the place, send [masked] an email, or an SMS to[masked] 998.

Please promote this meetup among your friends and anyone you think might be interested! Looking forward to seeing you all there!

~ FUTURE THINKERS SESSIONS ~ How will virtual reality change our future?

Future Thinkers Sessions for the Zeitgeist Movement Australia

An open platform to meet and chat with other ‘self-proclaimed’ controversial deep thinkers, scientists and philosophers… basically anyone who likes to think about anything.

Virtual reality month!

This month, we’re fortunate enough to have Malcolm Burt, a virtual reality and rollercoaster researcher at QUT, who will discuss the phenomenon which is virtual reality, and asks if it has the power to change the definition of a shared experience, and what it means to be human.

We’d love to give everyone in the audience an opportunity to discuss…
What are the implications of virtual reality?
What are the positive/negative influences on the environment?
Is it unavoidable? Should it be avoided?
How realistic can we make simulations?
Are we living in a simulation? What are the implications of believing this?
What is it that makes us uncomfortable about this technology? What potential do we see in it? … and many more!

Future Thinkers is a realistic, fun and empowering meet-up about applying science to social concern. Don’t worry, we don’t put you on the spot… there’s no expectation to explain your position, and no expectation of any qualification. It’s not in our ‘cynical yet idealistic, atheist, technocratic anarchistic activist’ nature. 😉 😛

We provide…

• Short presentations on human behaviour, society, new crazy technologies and cool ideas for hacking life!!

• Study groups and panel discussions on philosophical questions like “How do we engage people resistant to logic and reason?” or “Does wealth provide happiness?”

• Awesome socially-aware music, podcasts and radio shows

• Insightful and hilarious pointed videos for social concern

Please feel free to sit at the back and hide in the corner, or announce your opinion of some particular policy, or share your understanding of a scientific discovery or discuss your general thoughts on a particular topic. 😀 😉 We’d love that. We look forward to meeting you!
