Event Description
Every day we make ethical choices: what to eat, what to wear, how to get to work, where to shop, whether to give money to someone in need. How should we make these ethical choices? Do our choices matter?
In this unique event, philosopher Peter Singer guides us in a discussion of ten things that many of us believe really matter in our lives today, including suffering, happiness, knowledge, freedom, animal welfare and climate change. We will explore whether they all do, and if so, in what ways, and how they should inform our everyday choices.
Throughout the discussion we will be encouraged to consider the nature of our moral judgements. How do we decide what is right and wrong? Should we rely on our intuitive reactions? Should we follow the moral guide of our family, our friends, our religion? Is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ relative to the culture of the society in which we live? Are there ethical truths that we can discover through careful reasoning and reflection?
There will be conversation, debate and plenty of big questions as we put our rational selves to work to think deeply about our ethical responsibilities and what it means to lead a good life, guided by one of the world’s greatest minds.
